The Zhuo-Er mountain is part of Qilian Mountain Range 祁连山脉 and is composed of red sandstones. It is also known locally as “Zong Mu Ma glaze Ma” (Tibetan), which means beautiful Queen of Ruby. The Zhuo-Er mountain scenic area is located in Babao Town of Qilian County in northern Qinghai Province 青海省. One of the best months to visit Zhuo-Er mountain is July, as the rapeseed flowers 油菜花 are blooming, and with its breathtaking surrounding landscape, the whole place is utterly mesmerising.
Zhuo-Er mountain has a watch tower which was built during the Western Xia Dynasty 西夏 (Tangut Empire) that existed from 1038 to 1227 AD in what are now the northwestern part of China. Western Xia was conquered and destroyed by the Mongols in 1227 AD.

A Chinese Odyssey" - Original Film Music Score by Zhao Jiping
Zhao Jiping 赵季平 is a Chinese composer from Shaanxi 陕西. He is best known for his film scores for the Fifth Generation Chinese director Zhang Yimou 张艺谋.
My favourites of all his works are the two following, from the Movie 大话西游 A Chinese Odyssey (1995): 蘆葦蕩 and 西天取經路遙遙.
The famous monologue of the movie:-
(Once true love was placed before me, but I didn't cherish it. After I lost it, I regretted it. This is the most painful thing in the world. ... If heaven could give me another chance, I would tell the girl I love her. If I had to place a time limit on this love, I hope it would be 10,000 years).
Here is the Theme Song: Love of a Lifetime 一生所爱 by Lowell Lo 卢冠廷
Roughly translated into:-
“The sea of bitterness roars waves of love and hatred.
One can hardly avoid the destiny in the world.
Why the ones who love each other cannot be together?
Perhaps I must believe in fate.“>

The last garden of Eden - Zagana
In the summer of 1925, Joseph Rock (who had inspired James Hilton in writing the famous novel The Lost Horizon 1933) was in Diebu County to gather flora and fauna specimens. He wrote in his diary: "If the author of Genesis has seen the beauty of Diebu, he would have made this the birthplace of Adam and Eve. Diebu's scenery has indeed captured my soul. The vast area of jungle is like a live botanical museum. It is definitely the heaven for nature lovers".
During my long backpacking trip (~10 weeks) of Western China in 2011, the visit to Zagana 扎尕那 is the most memorable. Zagana 扎尕那 is located in Diebu County 迭部县, Gannan Prefecture 甘南地区 of Gansu Province 甘肃省, China. In local Tibetan language, "Zagana" means the stone box 石匣子. Indeed the whole of Zagana is surrounded by huge limestone crags. The main inhabitants of Zagana are Tibetans (Tebbu tribe). They grow their own crops such as vegetables and highland barley 青稞. There are four main villages here. People led simple life and live harmoniously in the this tranquil and beautiful land. One can surely find and feel the peace here. Unlike its neighbouring places like Jiuzhaigou 九寨沟 and Langmusi 郎木寺, Zagana is not touristy which made it a great place for painters, photographers, backpackers and trekkers. The best part of our visit was the chance to witness the harvest of highland barley. It is such a great thing to see their smiley faces enjoying a good harvest after all the hard work.
I highly recommend Zagana to all travellers.
In comparison, the photo on the left taken by me in 2011, and on the right taken by Dr. Joseph Rock in 1925. It is amazing to see the same place from the same viewpoint but 86 years apart.
Below are a few of Dr. Joseph Rock's photos of Zagana in 1925 (He referred to this place as Drakana).
