The Day Singapore Mourns

Today is the day Singapore mourns and bid farewell to its Founding Father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
Despite hours of heavy downpour, undeterred crowds throng the state funeral to say goodbye to their beloved and highly respected leader.

Crowds started to form as early as 7am in the morning and many wear black/white and carry Singapore flag to pay final tribute and witness the last journey of the man regarded as the Founding Father of the city state Singapore.

This year Singapore celebrate 50th year independence. With the great foundation that Mr Lee and his team has laid, I believe Singapore will continue to shine and enjoy greater success, progress and prosperity.

Excursion to Lake Tai (Taihu 太湖)

Right before the Lunar New Year festival, we spent a short trip to Lake Taihu (near Suzhou) of Jiangsu Province.

Lake Tai or Lake Taihu (太湖, literally means "Great Lake") is a large freshwater lake in the Yangtze Delta plain near Shanghai, China. The lake belongs to Jiangsu province and the southern shore forms its border with Zhejiang. With an area of 2,250 square kilometers (869 sq mi) and an average depth of 2 meters (6.6 ft),it is the third-largest freshwater lake in China, after Poyang and Dongting. The lake houses about 90 islands, ranging in size from a few square meters to several square kilometers.

Lake Tai is linked to the renowned Grand Canal and is the origin of a number of rivers, including Suzhou Creek. In recent years, Lake Tai has been plagued by pollution as a result of rapid economic growth in the surrounding region.

(Part 3) Celebrating Lunar New Year in Shanghai 上海春节

This is part 3 of the Series "Celebrating Lunar New Year in Shanghai 上海春节"

Today is first day of Lunar New Year (19 Feb 2015), and it is by far the finest day during the 12 days vacation in Shanghai.

With such a great weather, we decided to visit one of the best gardens in Shanghai, The Guyi Garden.
Guyi Garden (Chinese: 古猗园) is a classical Chinese garden in the town of Nanxiang in the suburban Jiading District of Shanghai, China. The garden is located about 21 kilometres (13 mi) from the city centre. Designed in the typical style of a Jiangnan classical garden, Guyi Garden is regarded as one of the five most important classical gardens of Shanghai. The garden was originally owned by magistrate Min Shiji during the Jiajing era (1522–1566) of the Ming dynasty. After passing through various private hands, it was extensively re-modelled in 1746, during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty. In 1789, the local gentry pooled funds and purchased the garden to serve as the spiritual home of the patron deity of the prefecture, associated with the local City God Temple. The garden then become communal property, and saw the addition of various pavilions and shrines, as well as the opening of shops, taverns and restaurants.
